Scientific Committee

The Cancer Research Wales Scientific Committee (CRWSC) makes recommendations to the Trustees on which applications should be funded, and may advise on our Research Strategy. Together we can change the future for the next generation and strive for a Wales united against cancer through research.

Our Scientific Committee members are:

Dr Chris Gaffney – Chair

Dr Gaffney is a former medical oncologist, with expertise in the treatment of breast and head and neck cancers. Dr Gaffney also brings experience and knowledge in radiation oncology and clinical trials.

Dr Steve Man

Dr Man is an expert in human immunology and the role of the immune system in cancer, based in the Division of Cancer and Genetics at Cardiff University.

Professor Chris Fegan

Professor Fegan is a retired clinical haematologist and Professor Emeritus at Cardiff University. Professor Fegan is also the former Director of Research and Development for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and co-founder and Chief Medical Officer at Telonostix.

Professor Huw Griffiths

Professor Griffiths is Professor Emeritus at Swansea University, with expertise in medical physics and medical imaging for many cancer types. Professor Griffiths has previously sat on award panels for several major funding organisations, including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Dr Heather Wilkes

Dr Heather Wilkes is a GP and is the national lead for Rapid Diagnostic Centres in Wales, with expertise in primary care and health systems.

Professor Shareen Doak

Professor Shareen Doak is Professor of Genotoxicology and Cancer in Swansea University Medical School. Shareen is co-lead of the In Vitro Toxicology Group. She is a UK and EUROTOX Registered Toxicologist, an invited Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and an elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (FLSW).
