Popular TV and radio personality Aled Hughes is opening the new Cancer Research Wales store in Bangor on Saturday 21 September.
Aled is cutting the ribbon at the shop in Unit 13 of the Menai Centre - opposite Marks and Spencer, at 10.00am.
The Bangor store is the third Cancer Research Wales shop to open in North Wales this year, with the Llandudno store opening in April and the Wrexham one in May.
It will be decorated in Cancer Research Wales’s distinctive coloured stripe branding logo which is inspired by DNA sequencing gels used by scientists to find cancer cells.
The store will sell top-quality goods including women’s, children’s and men’s clothing, a range of household items and bric-a-brac. It will also provide job and volunteering opportunities for local people.
Lorraine Boyd, Head of Retail at Cancer Research Wales said:
“I’d like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Aled Hughes for giving up his time to come and open our brand- new store in Bangor on Saturday 21 September. It’s a privilege to have him cut the ribbon for us and we’re very grateful to Aled for his support.
“We’re excited to be coming to Bangor and look forward to our colourful stripe-branded shop becoming a familiar and loved landmark in the city centre - and our own little community within the community, where there’s always a welcome.
“Please come and support us when we open on 21 September and help us to fund our life-changing research work by donating your pre-loved goods, shopping with us and volunteering your time.”
Welcoming Cancer Research Wales to Bangor, Rob Lloyd - CEO of Bearmont Capital and owner of the Menai Centre, said:
"I’m delighted that Cancer Research Wales has chosen to open a store in the Menai Centre, especially given their strong connection with Bangor University and the significant funding they’ve provided for vital research over the years. It’s a natural fit for them to have a presence in Bangor, helping to raise awareness of their incredible work and the timing is perfect as we see momentum building with the new Wellbeing Centre.
“This is the second unit we’ve facilitated for Cancer Research Wales, and I’m looking forward to supporting them in opening even more shops across Wales. I wish Cancer Research Wales every success with their new store and look forward to the opening day."
In the last 10 years, Cancer Research Wales has awarded over £3.6 million to research projects at Bangor University, including:
ThinkCancer!
Bangor University has received £1.2 million from Cancer Research Wales to fund the ThinkCancer! clinical trial. Based at the North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research, the ThinkCancer! trial is working with GP surgeries across the country to speed up cancer diagnosis and ensure all patients receive gold standard primary care.
Cancer Testis Antigens
Bangor University has been awarded over £500,000 from Cancer Research Wales to investigate cancer testis antigens - proteins that help tumours to survive and grow. The team is developing diagnostic tests for bowel and lung cancers, as well as methods to exploit these proteins for treating a range of tumours.
