Wales YFC Chair takes on 1,936km challenge for Cancer Research Wales

The Chair of Wales YFC, Angharad Thomas, is literally going the 'country' mile with an incredible fundraising challenge she has set herself in support of Cancer Research Wales.

When she took office in September 2025, Angharad from Carmarthenshire announced Cancer Research Wales as her Chairman's Charity for 2025/2026.

Angharad chose us as cancer has affected her family and the challenge she's chosen — the 1,936km challenge — ties in with Wales YFC's 90th anniversary this year.

Starting on 24 April, over the course of 90 days until 23 June, Angharad will be moving 1,936 kilometres either by walking, running, cycling or swimming. This will see her covering the equivalent of half a marathon a day — 13 miles — to raise money to support the work of Cancer Research Wales.

Cancer has affected my family

"In September last year, I had the honour of being elected Wales YFC Chairman for 2025/26. Being elected to this role is a privilege, but having the opportunity to serve as Chairman during Wales YFC's 90th year has made it particularly special and memorable," said Angharad.

"I chose Cancer Research Wales as my Chairman's Charity as cancer has affected several members of my close and extended family, as well as people within my wider community. Sadly, some of those diagnosed with this devastating disease are no longer with us. With one in every two people in Wales affected by cancer in some form, I believe it is vital to raise awareness within our communities and, importantly, to raise funds that remain in Wales to support life‑saving research and help give more people the chance of a cure."

Physically and mentally demanding challenge

"The distance of the 1,936km challenge reflects the year Wales YFC was founded, while the timeframe represents each year of its existence, equating to the equivalent of a half marathon a day," added Angharad.

"The challenge will be both physically and mentally demanding but compared to what so many individuals and families face, it will serve as my driving force to keep going. I have been overwhelmed by the encouragement and generosity shown by the wider community. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported, donated and encouraged me, and I am immensely proud to represent Wales YFC while raising funds for such an important cause," she reflected.

Playing a vital role in rural communities

Wales YFC is made up of nearly 6,000 members across 138 clubs and 12 counties, with an age range from 10 to 28.

The organisation plays a vital role in rural communities, providing young people with invaluable life skills, confidence and opportunities that are often unavailable elsewhere.

Delighted to have the support of Wales YFC

"We're grateful to Angharad for embracing her Chairman's Challenge wholeheartedly and taking on a challenge that also encourages the other Wales YFC members to get involved. It's a great idea to mark their 90th year celebrations," said Adam Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Research Wales.

"We're delighted to have the support of Wales YFC this year as it's a brilliant opportunity to connect with a younger audience, all across the country, many of whom will have been affected by cancer in their families. It's fantastic to strengthen awareness of our charity among Welsh language and rural communities.

"As an independent Welsh charity celebrating our 60th anniversary this year, it is vital to raise awareness of the research we fund in Wales for the benefit of people in Wales and we can't thank Angharad enough for her commitment and efforts," said Adam Fletcher.
